SUMO became a family of mobile coaching apps helping players improve in competitive titles like LoL, Overwatch, and DOTA 2.
By adapting our core experience to multiple games with very different data landscapes, we built a flexible system that users trusted and returned to.
The monetization model, subscription-based and relatively new to this space at the time, was well received by our core audience and helped fund future product pivots.

Each game vertical posed its own data constraints: League of Legends offered a robust API, Overwatch required scraping Blizzard’s public player profiles and Dota 2 provided only limited stats. These differences made it hard to offer consistent, timely and granular insights across apps.

To tackle this issue, we created a modular design system & feature architecture that allowed us to adapt each app’s depth and specificity while maintaining a coherent visual and functional experience. This let us scale the SUMO brand without sacrificing usability or trust.

With several designers working on different verticals with varying complexity, maintaining a unified design language & code base was a constant balancing act. Each game required rapid iteration and app-specific tweaks, but still had to feel like “SUMO.”

We invested in a central design system and held regular design reviews, cross-vertical sparring sessions and check-ins with dev leads. This helped us evolve shared patterns, find blind spots early, and accelerate implementation while keeping quality high.

Due to the functionality on API-supported SUMO verticals, players expected real-time feedback and detailed coaching in each app. But in some cases we only had delayed or incomplete data to work with due to dependencies on external data sources. This mismatch threatened product experience, user trust and engagement.

Introducing a subscription-based model was uncommon at the time, especially in companion apps for gaming. On top of that, our core value depended on third-party data sources that occasionally failed or changed.

The SUMO audience was tech-savvy and skeptical of traditional marketing. Reaching them for sufficient user growth required more than flashy visuals. We needed to speak their language, prove our value quickly and offer direct, two-way communication on their terms.
The complexity of the markets prescription / reimbursement system had to be tackled through a well structured and extensively guiding customer journey that enables multiple entry points (doctor referrals, self-managed, etc.) and confidently guides the user with supportively chunked steps, reminders & info material.

Solution: Community-first marketing & trust-driven surfaces
Solution: Community-first marketing & trust-driven surfaces
As part of the marketing efforts, we launched a dedicated product landing page, including a short explanation video and targeted influencer placements to introduce OVERSUMO in a tone and style that resonated with the gaming community.
To foster user trust and get a channel for direct, unfiltered user feedback, we created a dedicated subreddit for announcements, feedback and support — enabling async, transparent communication through upvoting and community replies.
Together, these efforts turned marketing into an extension of the product experience and gave users a sense of ownership in the app’s evolution.

SUMO grew into a widely recognized family of coaching apps that empowered competitive gamers to understand and improve their performance through data-driven insights.
Across LOLSUMO, OVERSUMO, and DOTASUMO, we reached over 13 million downloads, maintained an average store rating of 4.5 stars, and achieved a five-digit monthly recurring revenue.
The successful monetization of SUMO products laid the foundation for the company’s shift toward a broader platform strategy thinking well beyond the original apps.

Leading AND actively participating in design across the SUMO family taught me to balance consistency with flexibility, craft with systems, and team support with product focus.
Particularly my two-sided mentoring approach on equal footing allowed me to significantly improve my coaching style and grow together as a team.
I also saw firsthand how the lack of direct control over data sources can drasticly challenge UX, but also open the door to creative, out of the box solutions.

Beni was one of those rare designers who really understood how to work with tech.
He had a strong product mindset, always thinking a few steps ahead and making sure design decisions made sense for both users and implementation.
Working with him was smooth — he was well-organized, open to feedback, and focused on finding solutions rather than getting stuck on problems. Plus, he brought a really positive and supportive energy to the team, which made a big difference in day-to-day collaboration.

Beni played a key role at Dojo Madness, both for the team and the company. He took full responsibility for the design team and really managed to support both the people and the business side.
I always appreciated how independent and reliable he was—he kept things running smoothly while also bringing in fresh ideas for new projects and branding. On top of that, Beni was super easy to work with: clear in communication, humble, and always supportive.

Beni had a big impact on my growth as a designer. He always took the time to give thoughtful feedback and created a space where I felt safe to learn, try things out, and ask questions.
What stood out most was how he led by example — staying calm under pressure, thinking through problems with care, and always keeping the bigger picture in mind.
He was approachable, supportive, and genuinely cared about helping others grow.

Senior Product Designer
Beni had a big impact on my growth as a designer. He always took the time to give thoughtful feedback and created a space where I felt safe to learn, try things out, and ask questions.
What stood out most was how he led by example — staying calm under pressure, thinking through problems with care, and always keeping the bigger picture in mind.
He was approachable, supportive, and genuinely cared about helping others grow.
